“I think that is why I relish writing for you so much…With writing, we have second chances…”
“For so it is written: AND IF WE ARE TO SRTIVE FOR A BETER FUTURE, MUSTN’T WE BE FAMILIAR AND RECONCILED WITH OUR PAST?”
– Jonathan Safran Foer, Everything Is Illuminated
The words come from one of my favorite books, Everything Is Illuminated, which is a narrative about love, family, loss, remembering, writing, and moving forward. It’s beautiful, weaving poetry and novel into an incredible story. And I’ll confess; while reading it, I cried, threw the book across the room, and yelled a few curse words. Necessary, I think.
JSF’s writing outweighs mine, but his words get at the crux of why I blog and, more importantly, why I write. Yeah, I studied the literature in college, so of course I love reading, discussing, and writing. But it’s what I do to unpack what I think, see, do, say, and don’t act upon. If I look back through old journals, I see life as a process, a story only beginning. A story that’s backwards and upside down most of the time. The way I see it, my story makes sense in the context of my own reflection but is most meaningful in the context of other stories… your stories.
So, yes, to answer your [possible] question, this is another personal blog. I’m not sure what I’ll post exactly, probably a bunch of things, but stay tuned if you’re brave or bored. Some topics you can except include lists, social work and social issues (yeah, I’m in the People Business, Folks, but I’ll try to keep unnecessary ranting to a bare minimum), current issues, books, spirituality and faith, music, poetry (maybe… mandatory poetry readings in college may have scarred me for life), food, and random fun. It WON’T be my personal journal, because, well, that’s creepy, and I’m all about boundaries. Yeah, I don’t know what to tell you to expect, but I’ll try to make it worthwhile.
Will I blog every day? Nnnoooo, I tried that on my last blog (it exists still, but it’s complicated to import…) for the month of November, and it got a little ridiculous and VERY CHEESY. In honor of my readership, I won’t do that to you (or to myself either), since it’s painful, and I prefer pleasantries, when pain is unnecessary (i.e. – NaBloPoMo 2011).
Give me ideas! I welcome your thoughts. Cheers!
